Newspapers in Education (NIE) is one of the most exciting educational tools available today. The Rockford Register Star provides newspapers to area schools by subsidizing 75 percent of the cost of classroom newspapers.
The rest of the cost is covered by donations from readers, fundraisers and local businesses who make up our Partners in Education initiative.
Schools use the newspaper to teach a variety of subjects all all grade levels including; history, reading, social studies, math, economics, composition, journalism and government - just to name a few.
Studies have shown that using the newspaper in the classroom helps students:
- Improve reading and writing skills with feature articles, entertainment reviews and even comics.
- Build vocabulary with crossword puzzles, word games, and editorials.
- Cultivate critical thinking skills through coverage of local, national and international news.
- Clarify values and develop real-life decision making skills through human interest stories and advice columns.
- Sharpen math and problem solving abilities with sports statistics, stock market listings, weather forecasts and retail advertisements.
- Broaden their perspective with polictical cartoons, opinion columns and editorials.
- Apply life skills through classified ads and business and consumer news.
